Neighborhood Watch

A Neighborhood Watch is neighbors helping neighbors. They/We are the extra eyes and ears for reporting crime and helping our neighbors.

Community and neighborhood safety begins with personal safety and responsibility. Part of being safe is knowing what possible dangers or hazards there are and taking steps to prevent crime and protect yourself.

 

Home Owner tips

  • Keep doors and windows locked.

  • Keep front and back porch lights on during the night.

  • Never open the door for someone you don't know.

  • Use automatic timers to turn on the lights when you and your family aren't home so that it looks like you're home.

  • Stop newspaper and mail delivery if you and your family are going to be away from home for an extended period of time so that it doesn't pile up showing that you are away.

  • Don't leave a spare key under the doormat or in your mailbox.

  • Keep bikes, skateboards and sports equipment inside the house or garage when not being used.

  • Install motion detector lights around the outside of your house, including side doors, garage doors and the balcony.

  • Get to know your neighbors so you can work together and look our for each other if there is any suspicious behavior in the neighborhood.

  • entry door have a deadbolt lock and wide angle viewer?

  • sliding glass door have a wooden rod or metal brace in the track so it can't be opened and pins in the overhead frame so it can't be lifted out?

  • landlord or building manager tightly control all keys?

Check Out Your Building

  • Is there some kind of control over who enters and leaves the building?

  • Are walkways, entrances, parking areas, elevators, hallways, stairways, laundry rooms, and storage areas well lighted, 24 hours a day?

  • Are fire stairs locked from the stairwell side above the ground floor, so you can exit but no one can enter?

  • Are mailboxes in a well-traveled, well-lighted area, and do they have good locks?

  • Are things well maintained — are burnt out lights fixed promptly, shrubs trimmed, trash removed?


Tips for Reporting a Crime or Suspicious Behavior

How to compile reliable facts

  • Give a complete description?

  • What is he/she wearing?

  • When is person doing this act?

  • Where is activity taking place?

  • What is relationships of person to others?

  • Are there strange odors?

  • How do you know what you know?

Anonymous Tips!

  • Useful-however courts view them as unreliable.

  • Police cannot arrest on anonymous tips.

  • Non-anonymous tips are better/can check reliability of a real person.

  • People prefer to give anonymous information for many reason.
